What is a home EV charger and why do I need one?

A home EV charger is an electric vehicle charging Unit that is installed at your home for the convenience of charging your electric vehicle. The need for a home EV charger arises from the fact that electric vehicles require a substantial amount of charging time, and it may not be practical to rely solely on public charging stations.

The most important reasons to have a home EV charger are:

  • Convenience of charging your vehicle in your own time.
  • Taking advantage of cheaper night tariff to reduce the costs by 75%.
  • Charging your car from renewable energy sources such as Solar panels or wind turbine.
How do I choose the right home EV charger?

Choosing the right home EV charger depends on several factors, such as the type of electric vehicle you own, your daily driving habits, your budget, and your property type.
In the UK most houses have a single-phase supply, therefore a 7kW charger is suitable, however if you happen to have a 3-phase supply, then you could get a 22kW charger and triple your charge time.

We highly recommend smart chargers, because they allow you to control the schedule charging and you can take advantage of cheaper night tariff.

If your drive is too far from where your charger can be installed then we recommend you getting an untethered charger because this gives you flexibility to get a longer cable as long as 20 meters long, but again if your charger could be installed closer to your vehicle then we recommend a tethered charger to give you more convenience.

Either way we would be happy to assess and make recommendations based on your personal requirements.

How much does it cost to install a home EV charger?

The cost of EV chargers varies, depending on the charger itself, as some have more features than others.

The labour for installing the charger is usually around £350 Plus VAT which would include all materials such as cable, breakers, clips, glands, or any other required material. However, it all depends on the complexity of the installation and in some cases, there may be a requirement to install additional fuse board and there may be a significant cable run.
Typically, we could install a smart EV charger in our home including full installation and the charger itself for under £1000 including VAT so please get in touch for a free and no obligation quote.

Do I need a permit to install a home EV charger?

You don’t usually require having to have a permit for an EV charger but if you don’t have a driveway and you need to run a lead over a public footpath then you will need to get permission from your local council but usually, they do allow it.

If you live in a block of flats and you need the charger in an underground car park, then again you may need permission from the owner of the building.

What are solar panels and how do they work?

A home battery is a great way to store excess energy from Solar and use it when the sun goes down in the evenings, however there are various ways you can use a home battery.

We always recommend batteries with solar PV systems because they store energy for later use, rather than giving it away to the grid for free and this allows you to maximise your usage from your Solar generation.

Batteries can also be charged from the grid, so if you benefit from a cheaper night tariff then this would be a great option to use and charge your battery at a cheaper rate and use it for you daily use rather than paying the higher day rate.

This is a great way for businesses to save drastically as well as home owners and could also provide an extra option for a backup power in case of a power outage.
